CPAA was started in 1969 mainly to provide financial assistance to needy cancer patients. Over the last thirty years the organisation has expanded its mission to address the root cause of the exponential increase in cancer cases in Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) is a registered charitable non-governmental organisation (NGO) working towards the “Total Management of Cancer” as a disease, which includes: q Spreading awareness on the dangers inherent in accepted social practices such as chewing of tobacco, early marriage and multiple pregnancies, which are responsible for approximately 70% of cancers in q Initiating steps for the early detection of cancer since treatment at this stage leads to a cure in a majority of cases. q Providing complete assistance to cancer patients beyond that given by the medical profession, that is, taking a holistic approach, not attacking the malignancy in isolation. Our activities encompass every area related to cancer, including raising awareness, early detection, insurance, patient care, medical and financial aid and rehabilitation. Raising Awareness: In order to raise awareness about what lifestyles can result in an increased risk of contracting cancer, CPAA conducts lectures. 2,90,000 people have been reached in schools, colleges, factories, residential localities, clubs and offices. Early detection: CPAA holds regular, free Cancer Screening OPDs at our clinics at Naigaon and Prabhadevi and at on site locations. 1,62,797 healthy individuals have been screened since 1987 and 276 cancer patients were detected. Insurance: In a tie-up with New India Assurance, CPAA provides insurance coverage against costs incurred for treatment of cancer. 11,140 policyholders have been enrolled since 1994. Rs. 92 lakhs have been disbursed to 71 cancer patients who had availed of the policy. Patient Care: The activities covered by the patient care department range from Budgeted Aid to Transportation Assistance to Playgroup for children and providing Prostheses (artificial body parts). 90,000 cancer patients have been provided medical assistance. Rehabilitation Centre: CPAA rehabilitates patients and their relatives, producing a number of high quality items for every day use. 25,000 cancer patients and their family members have been provided jobs at the Rehabilitation Centre.
